ABC believes that civic engagement is essential to a healthy democracy, to public accountability and to social progress. ABC recognizes the need to create a strong infrastructure within the region to engage, inform and organize key regional stakeholders such as students, parents, community members, civic leaders and elected officials. Empowering individuals to advocate for themselves and their communities is a powerful way to create grassroots change as well as to work towards changing policy for a more equitable Los Angeles.

The SELA Votes! Initiative is a peer-to-peer voter outreach program engaging Latina/o voters in communities across Southeast Los Angeles (SELA) that unites local community-based organizations to build voter power in the region. The primary goal of this program is to build the political infrastructure in SELA to to strengthen the electoral infrastructure and help address a key civic desert in the region. This initiative includes Alliance for a Better Community (ABC), AltaMed, Council of Mexican Federations in North America (COFEM), East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice (EYCEJ), Innovate Public Schools, Latino Equality Alliance (LEA) Newstart Housing Corporation, Southeast Community Development Corporation (SCDC), and the SELA Collaborative.

ABC continues to hold a safe virtual space for parents and community members through Platicas Comunitarias, or community conversations. The Platicas have been informative to identify and advance ABC’s priorities in K-12 and higher education, digital divide, civic engagement, health and economic prosperity.  Through the Platicas, ABC continues to collect data from parents to help us with a roadmap for advancing advocacy and policy efforts including budget advocacy, learning loss, digital divide, English learner policy work, and health access that is inclusive of the immigrant and Latina/o community.
