Dr. Joseph I. Castro’s impact on higher education goes far beyond his titles, he was a mentor, known as “Joe” by many, a fearless champion for students, and an inspiration to all who knew him. Appointed in 2021, Dr. Castro was the first California native and Mexican American to lead the California State University system. His journey from first-generation college student to CSU Chancellor exemplified his perseverance and dedication. Dr. Castro’s story was a testament to the opportunities public higher education can create and the importance of leaders who deeply understand the communities they serve. His leadership represented a powerful milestone for representation, signaling to students from immigrant families and first generation college backgrounds that they too could rise to the highest levels of leadership.
