Alliance for a Better Community Joins Coalition to Defend Fair Representation Through Election Rigging Response Act

This ballot measure ensures California can respond if Texas or other states alter congressional maps mid-decade

Alliance for a Better Community (ABC) joins a broad coalition of civil rights and social justice organizations in endorsing the Election Rigging Response Act. Fair representation is the cornerstone of our democracy, and we cannot allow the voices of Latina/o, Black, AAPI, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and working class communities to be diminished by unfair political maneuvers.

Texas has advanced mid-decade redistricting plans that could eliminate congressional seats historically representing communities of color and shift power without the input by voters. These changes threaten to weaken representation in Congress for millions of Americans and undermine the principle that voters should choose their representatives.

Protecting voter integrity is essential to preserving our democracy,” said Vanessa Aramayo, CEO and President of Alliance for a Better Community (ABC). “The Election Rigging Response Act is an important step to ensuring that voters have the final say when it comes to representation and that is exactly where the power of our democracy belongs.”

The Election Rigging Response Act gives California the ability to defend fair elections. If Texas or other states move forward with maps that would reduce representation for communities of color, California could temporarily adjust its own maps to maintain balance in Congress and safeguard our communities’ voice. These adjustments would only take effect if Texas or other states act first, and would temporarily adopt new congressional districts for California for use in congressional elections through 2030, retaining California’s Citizen Redistricting Commission for the regular redistricting after the 2030 census.

“This is a direct and urgent attack on our democracy,” said California Teachers Association (CTA) President David B. Goldberg. “If this power grab goes unchecked, we will only see more drastic cuts to public education, healthcare, and other critical services and a further erosion of basic civil and human rights in our communities.”

ABC urges Californians to vote YES on November 4 to defend democracy, protect fair elections, and ensure our communities continue to be represented in Congress.
