Alliance for a Better (ABC) community organized a press event on June 16, 2005, designed to raise awareness and encourage parents to enroll their children in supplementary educational services (SES). Conference speakers included José Huizar, LAUSD School Board Member; María Casillas, President, Families in Schools; John Leichty, Associate Superintendent of Extended Day Programs; Jennifer Rodriguez, Policy Coordinator, Alliance for a Better Community; and Roxana Avalos, a Parent from Pico Elementary School. As a result of ABCs advocacy, outreach and media efforts, LAUSD saw an increase in students registering for the program. Approximately 30,000 students registered for SES in LAUSD in the 2005-2006 school year which was up from the previous year.
