ABC works to ensure that after-school programs are high quality and address the learning needs of all students including English learners.  After-school programs generally provide homework assistance and other educational enrichment activities to students.  However, the vast majority do so without adjusting curriculum or instruction to meet the unique needs of English learners thereby limiting the programs benefits.

As a result, ABC completed a one year assessment on Maximizing After-School Opportunities for English Learners and determined that the needs of one of LA’s largest populations, English learners (EL) were not being met.  The report aims to raise awareness about the benefits ELs gain through their participation in after-school programs and the importance of implementing professional development tools and materials that address the needs of these students.

  • Participating in local and state-level committee that advocate for high quality after school programs. These committees includes the California After-school Network, the network serves as a statewide coalition that influences policy and coordinates local and state-wide efforts that support out of school time for children
  • Raising awareness of the potential impact of after-school programs for ELs at state and national conferences
